Concordia University Texas boldly and publicly confesses the truths expressed in the historic creeds of the Christian faith (the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed).
As an example, we affirm the truths of the Apostles Creed:
We believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
For additional clarity about the faith we profess, we provide the following statements:
- We believe the Bible to be inspired by God and thus the authoritative Word of God, without error in what it teaches. [Scripture Alone]
- Salvation comes entirely through God's grace, not through human merit or works. Humanity is incapable of saving itself due to sin, and it is only through God's undeserved mercy and favor that anyone can be reconciled to Him. This grace is freely given, not earned. [Grace Alone]
- Justification before God comes through faith alone in Jesus Christ. A person is declared righteous not by their own deeds or religious observances, but solely by trusting in Christ's atoning work on the cross. This faith itself is a gift from God, not a human achievement. [Faith Alone]
- All legitimate work and roles in life are sacred callings through which Christians serve God and neighbor. There is no spiritual hierarchy between "religious" and "secular" vocations—a parent, nurse, or business owner serves God just as truly as a pastor. Through their various vocations, believers become God's agents for flourishing in the world through which He cares for His creation and all people. [Vocation]
- All people were created in the image of God and are therefore worthy of our respect. Christ died for all people, and we live to make disciples of all people. We value all as a gift from God, and following the example of Christ, we advocate especially for the undervalued, marginalized, and oppressed. [Purpose and Belonging]
Furthermore, the University bylaws state that:
The University is and shall operate as an educational institution that is aligned with the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and subscribes to the Confession of the LCMS as currently outlined in Article II of the LCMS Constitution, namely that it accepts without reservation:
- The Scriptures of the Old and the New Testament as the written Word of God and the only rule and norm of faith and of practice;
- All the Symbolical Books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church as a true and unadulterated statement and exposition of the Word of God, to wit: the three Ecumenical Creeds (the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed), the Unaltered Augsburg Confession, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, the Large Catechism of Luther, the Small Catechism of Luther, and the Formula of Concord.
